Our story

It all started with a passion for green-tech. Then, combined with experience at a Norwegian data centre and then leading a climate charity in London – together this has led to the creation of HPC-AI.

About HPC-AI

The UK

The UK is already a global leader in AI but there is a shortage of suitable infrastructure (according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang), to meet the growing demands of this energy-intensive industry.  Furthermore, there is simply not enough energy to meet this huge demand (source).

We exist to challenge this status quo. We will provide sustainable AI through battery energy storage (BESS) and a data centre powered exclusively by renewable energy.

HPC-AI UK Ltd is a Glasgow-based digital infrastructure developer founded and led by Ned Collier, whose work sits at the intersection of renewable energy and sustainable digital infrastructure. HPC-AI UK was established with a clear and specific mission: to develop the UK’s most sustainable HPC and AI infrastructure, anchored in Scotland’s renewable energy abundance and designed to deliver sovereign, competitively-priced compute capacity to British organisations.

Location

Scotland has an abundance of renewables, from on- and offshore wind, tidal and hydro-electric power.

Scotland is a global leader in offshore wind power but there is curtailment in some places. We plan to locate our BESS close to the sites with the highest curtailment, drawing off the suprplus energy and keeping the turbines spinning whilst charging the BESS while acting as the backup power source to a data centre on the same site.

Clients

Our target audience is UK AI companies: we want to provide high quality Tier 3, N+1 data centre services to British companies for data sovereignty and data security reasons. We also want to challenge the Hyperscalers by locating everyday cloud services here in the UK, reducing the carbon footprint.

Community

We want to employ local people – providing long term employment opportunities that are secure and fulfilling.

Our infrastructure will include heat reuse (in our BESS and DC) providing the community with low cost waste heat for domestic heating, aqua or agriculture in greenhouses.

Our team

Employees will be posted here when recruited.

Ned Collier

CEO & Founder

Ned brings direct commercial experience of the world’s leading model of hydro-powered data centre infrastructure, having worked at Bulk Infrastructure in Norway — the company behind the N01 Campus in Kristiansand, a 300-hectare facility powered by captive hydroelectric generation and widely regarded as the global benchmark for renewable-powered digital infrastructure at scale.

Prior to founding HPC-AI UK, Ned built and led Think and Do London, a climate action organisation that grew from a community initiative in Camden into a wider metropolitan programme — demonstrating not only a long-standing personal commitment to the values of environmental sustainability and community benefit, but a practical ability to build organisations, engage diverse stakeholders, and navigate the public interest dimension of climate-linked projects.

Since establishing HPC-AI UK, Ned has been actively developing the company’s Scottish pipeline — engaging with Scottish Enterprise and local planning authorities on multiple potential sites across the country. Separately, HPC-AI UK has developed and published detailed analytical work on the structural barriers to unlocking curtailed Scottish offshore wind for data centre development — work that informed the company’s conclusion that the Lochaber hydro-private-wire model represents a superior and immediately achievable solution to the same underlying challenge: delivering genuinely renewable, price-stable, sovereign digital infrastructure in Scotland.
